What Is Growers Local?

Our mission is to expand access to locally grown food for consumers and expand access to markets for farmers.  More and more, consumers are demanding to know where their food came from, and they are demanding food that is local, chemical free, and nutrient rich.  Restaurants and other institutions would love to offer more locally grown options, but sourcing produce from a multitude of small farmers is oftentimes impractical.

At the same time, local farmers are producing abundant harvest and trying to sell them once a week at local farmer’s markets.  Too often, crops are planted on speculation, resulting in waste.  Farmers would love to sell to local demand that they know exists, but small farmers lack the marketing resources to do so.

Growers Local solves these problems in the following ways:

  1. We provide a one-stop shop for consumers and institutions to order fresh, local food from all farmers in the area.  Orders are packaged and can be picked up weekly.
  2. Rather than sourcing from several small farmers, restaurants and other institutions can order directly through Growers Local and have their fresh produce delivered weekly.
  3. Rather than growing on speculation, farmers eliminate food waste by growing for confirmed orders.  Farmers harvest only the crops that they know have already been sold.
  4. Farmers expand their customer base beyond the weekly farmer’s market crowd.

Joel Roggenkamp Joel is responsible for building the technology that runs Growers Local. He spent two years as a Business Analyst for an aviation software company before becoming a business teacher. He is the founder of Best Attendance, a software company that helps community leaders run their organizations.  He has taught classes on business and computer science at the college and high school levels.
